The Core Architecture of Hanumatodi

Hanumatodi is a Melakarta Raga No. 8 in Carnatic music. Use the arohanam and avarohanam above as your starting point: play the scale slowly on the harmonium, hold each swara until the pitch settles, and only then sing it back.
Musical Mood and Character
Rasa: gravity and pathos. Todi is the 8th melakarta, taking flat rishabham, gandharam, dhaivatam and nishadam. It is defined less by its scale than by its gamakas: almost every swara is oscillated, and the raga is considered one of the most demanding to render accurately.
It is a principal raga of the concert repertoire, chosen for extended ragam-tanam-pallavi elaboration. Todi carries a gravity that quietens an audience. It is not a raga you put on in the background; sung properly, it takes hold of the listener and holds on.
Essential Phrases for Practice
Start with the plain arohanam and avarohanam in slow speed, holding each swara until it is steady. Once the scale is secure, practise it against a shruti drone and only then move to gamaka-laden phrases. Whenever a phrase feels uncertain, go back to the scale and check yourself swara by swara before building speed.
