Bhairavi

Bhairavi is a Janya Raga derived from Natabhairavi (Melakarta 20) in Carnatic music. Its swaras are drawn from the parent scale Natabhairavi, and the way it selects, omits or bends those swaras is what gives it a character of its own. Use the arohanam and avarohanam above as your starting point: play the scale slowly on the harmonium, hold each swara until the pitch settles, and only then sing it back.

Rasa: shringara and bhakti — love shading into devotion. Bhairavi is a janya of Natabhairavi that uses both dhaivatams — chatushruti in the ascent, shuddha in the descent. That ambiguity is the source of its emotional range: the same raga can express longing, reverence or grief depending on which phrases are emphasised.

It is among the most substantial ragas in the system, carrying major kritis, varnams and ragam-tanam-pallavi elaborations. Bhairavi does not give itself up quickly — but sung at length it produces a depth of feeling few ragas reach, moving between devotion and heartache without ever announcing the change.

Start with the plain arohanam and avarohanam in slow speed, holding each swara until it is steady. Once the scale is secure, practise it against a shruti drone and only then move to gamaka-laden phrases. Whenever a phrase feels uncertain, go back to the scale and check yourself swara by swara before building speed.
